Fourth of July was the last memory I have of Edie, sitting there on that plaid blanket in the middle of those families, her face a Greek statue, regal and blank, the months that followed so busy I scarcely had time to think about it. Instead I thought of college, and making money, and the colored girl from Life magazine, her expression so purposeful and decided and young. We were probably the same age, that student and I, and I kept thinking how she’d taken the bus to Washington just so she could make an impression on the president and I decided that that was what I wanted too, to be connected to change, to progress. To be connected to that girl. There were all these other things out there that mattered more than fashions and china and electric roasters and deep freezes. There was that Negro girl and all her purpose. That’s what I wanted for myself.

I stopped trying to make my hair curly. As if, having learned the technique, I didn’t have to do it anymore. My hair was straight, and I wore it straight in the scarves Edie had given me, and for a long time those scarves smelled like Edie. Like lavender. For a long time I thought of them not just as Edie’s scarves but as Edie herself, the old Edie, the before-she-came-to-my-house Edie, as if she were always near me telling me I was splendid and that people were listening to me and don’t stand on one foot and don’t look at the ceiling and everyone’s going to like you like you like you.
